Wines as we know them are generally distinguished as either red or white wine. However, this distinction is much too simplified considering the various types of wine depending on the grapes they were made of and the location of the vineyard where they were grown.

The knowledge that wine can come in hundreds, perhaps thousands of flavors, can leave you with a feeling of dread especially when you have to order wine in restaurants. The basic rule is that there is no one perfect wine because it really depends on your own taste buds. An expensive wine that may taste perfect for one can taste horrible to another.

When ordering wine in restaurant, ask for the wine you personally prefer or have gotten familiar to the taste of. If you are the adventurous type or you really don’t have an idea which wines are good, then it is always practical to ask the help of the waiter or the restaurant staff taking your order. It is proper to surmise that the staff or waiter should have been given instructions and the basic <a href="http://www.equestrianriderguide.com/amazon" style="color:#0033FF;text-decoration:underline;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='Equestrian Rider Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>training in wine selection by the restaurant owner or manager. But what if the waiter is just as ignorant as their customers about their wine list? What if the big decision as to which wine to order is left in your hands?

If no one on the staff is knowledgeable about wines or can’t make suggestions, ask the waiter to just come back and then ask your companions about their preferences. Ask your dining companions whether they prefer red or white wine. The most common choices would be chardonnay for white wine as this is the king of white wine, or cabernet sauvignon for red wine as this is known as the king of red wine. No other choice could be much safer.Â

If you are eating white meat life fish or chicken, it would be best to order white wine. If you have chosen red meat like pork or beef roast, then red wine lie Pinot Noir would be an ideal wine to order. Ordering wine by the bottle is sometimes cheaper than ordering wine by glass. There are restaurants that offer discounts to customers who order two or more bottles of wine.

Whether or not you have a limited budget, it is always wise to ask for the price of wine per bottle or per glass, if only to have a stock knowledge of their prices the next time you are tasked with the same decision to order wine for the group. If money isn’t a problem for you, then Dom Perignon would be a good choice although this wine is higher priced than the others. There are equally good wine sparklers like Iron Horse or Domaine Chandon which are priced reasonably, depending on where you are eating.

There are wines that are better when they are less than three years old. You can try ordering white wines like Pinot Blanc or French Macon are dry white wines that command good prices and can be eaten well with appetizers. Wines are best drunk when they have been properly chilled.

Florence Nightingale was a pioneer of the nursing field. She was first publicly noticed as an administrator during the Crimean War. Her unwavering determination to provide the best, sanitary care possible cut the death rate considerably for her side. She continued to contribute to the field of nursing throughout her life and continued to open doors for nurses and women in general.

In 1893, Mrs. Lystra E. Gretter and the Farrand <a href="http://www.equestrianriderguide.com/amazon" style="color:#0033FF;text-decoration:underline;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='Equestrian Rider Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>Training School for Nurses wrote an adaptation of the physician’s Hippocratic Oath for nurses. It was named the Florence Nightingale Pledge in honor of the esteemed founder of nursing.

This pledge is most often recited at graduation/pinning ceremonies for nurses. It is also often included in programs honoring nurses during Nurses Week (May 6-12) or on Nurses Day (May 6). May 12 is the birth date of Nurse Nightingale.

The Florence Nightingale Pledge

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

Florence Nightingale Quotations

• Women never have a half-hour in all their lives (excepting before or after anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up so late, or, more rarely, get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have ‘no time in the day to themselves.’ [1852] • And so is the world put back by the death of every one who has to sacrifice the development of his or her peculiar gifts (which were meant, not for selfish gratification, but for the improvement of that world) to conventionality. [1852] • It may seem a strange principle to enunciate as the very first requirement in a Hospital that it should do the sick no harm. [1859] • I can stand out the war with any man.

• I stand at the altar of the murdered men, and, while I live, I fight their cause. [1856] Asceticism is the trifling of an enthusiast with his power, a puerile coquetting with his selfishness or his vanity, in the absence of any sufficiently great object to employ the first or overcome the last. [1857] • No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this — ‘devoted and obedient.’ This definition would do just as well for a porter. It might even do for a horse. It would not do for a policeman. [1859] • For what is Mysticism? Is it not the attempt to draw near to God, not by rites or ceremonies, but by inward disposition? Is it not merely a hard word for ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is within’? Heaven is neither a place nor a time. [1873] • You ask me why I do not write something…. I think one’s feelings waste themselves in words, they ought all to be distilled into actions and into actions which bring results.

It has been a few years since I have worked with other people’s horses as managing my own herd of twenty two takes up most of my time. When a friend of mine recently asked me to help her with her <a href="http://www.equestrianriderguide.com/amazon" style="color:#0033FF;text-decoration:underline;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='Equestrian Rider Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>horse I was somewhat reluctant. Working with someone’s horse is a little like disciplining their child. It can be a delicate situation that carries a lot of responsibility if things go wrong. Although I agreed to help I was more than a little nervous about the upcoming training session. What I didn’t realize at the time was that stepping outside my comfort zone would be a powerful learning experience.

Tracy’s horse, Oliver, is a big athletic ex-race horse who is very friendly and, according to Tracy, compliant in most situations. She was having trouble however with an exercise that we call ‘push and draw.’ Push and draw is a foundation exercise in our equine training system of natural horsemanship. We ask the horse to move his hind end away from us and turn to face us. The horse will then follow us as we draw him along. We call it the relationship exercise because this is how horses communicate with each other in the herd. It enables us to establish a leadership role with our horse quickly and effectively. Because they have a strong need for leadership our horses love this exercise and we often use it as a reward during training. The fact that Oliver was not responding was puzzling.

When Tracy brought Oliver into the arena I could immediately see anxiety and tension in his high head and stiff carriage. When I asked him to move his hind end away, instead of smoothly crossing one hind foot over the other, he crow hopped around in an awkward and jerky fashion. His front feet rotated but remained firmly planted in the dirt despite my efforts to draw him forward with me. His entire body was braced and resistant.

It turned out that a previous trainer had taught Oliver to plant his feet and not move forward. To stay rooted in one spot goes against the natural instincts of a horse. In the wild horses must be able to move their feet at all times in order to flee predators and threatening situations. While it is important to be able to influence the direction and speed of a horse’s movement, stopping all forward motion results in the anxiety and tension that I could see so clearly in Oliver.

It took twenty minutes of persistent coaching and gentle insistence to convince Oliver that he could in fact move forwards. At that moment of realization the change in Oliver was instant, obvious and quite remarkable. Every muscle in his body relaxed and his head dropped from the rafters down toward his knees. Within moments he was smoothly crossing one hind foot in front of the other and following us around the arena like a large puppy.

In natural horsemanship training this dramatic change in Oliver is called ‘turning loose’. Turning loose describes the relaxation of the horse’s mind and body as he is allowed to follow his natural instincts and move freely forward of his own volition. As I drove home from the arena that night I wondered how often I had inadvertently, through words or actions, blocked the forward motion and natural instincts of my employees. Looking back I could recall situations in which they had looked as tense and resistant as Oliver.

Stepping out of my comfort zone with Oliver has caused me to look at my leadership from a new perspective. I realize now that if I want an engaged, committed and productive team of employees I have to ‘turn them loose’ so they may contribute in their own way to our vision and direction.
