fun horse lesson for children?

July 9, 2010

I work at a barn and need to plan a lesson for children while they are not riding a Equestrian Rider Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>horse. The lesson can be about tack, anatomy, breeds etc. It needs to be fun and I cant think of anything to do other than have kids point out the parts of the horses body. What else can I do?

I had some 4-h girls label a horses parts like barrel, withers, neck, shoulder, with a type of crayon that they use on cattle, it made the horse parts interactive and it is safe for the horse and washes off easily.

You could also do breeds jeopardy,.

make a scavenger hunt and have the children look for the things on the list. make it like tack. and have them split up into teams and point out everything with an adult. whoever gets everything first will win.

Get some glitter, sparkles, and ribbons and decorate you horses. Have a contest at the end to see what horse has the best ‘look.’ Have the kids march them around like they are modeling and have the others rate them

Take a walk through the barn and talk about the different colors and markings of the horses. Then, give everyone a treasure list, and have them hunt for horses with the markings or colors on the treasure list, e.g., name 3 bays and 3 horses with snips.

If they’re older, or more experience, dissassemble some bridles and have a race to see who can reassemble them the quickest.

Think horse mastership and make a game out of it.

i.e. what makes a safe paddock. Go see, clean trough, good fences, any weeds etc

Our children found cleaning saddles fun.

Name different feeds.

Colour in pictures: make a rainbow picture of a horse, blue wither, pink crest, yellow mane, purple tail, green shoulder etc.

Children love jumping over the jumps without horses, or invite their pet dogs to join in.

Undo a bridle/ stirrups/ brushes etc put them in a pile. Set up a relay where they have to collect a piece of paper with a item of tack written/drawn on it they race down find that item, come back – eat some chocolate before the next persons turn. This could be done in teams.

Quiz games are fun, highest height a horse has jumped, name this part of a horse, how do you prepare for a day riding if it’s wet, how do you cool a horse down. etc Throw out a lolly for each correct answer. Little ones love stickers.

From experience children love the idea of party game/theory combined.
Best of luck, hope something here is helpful.

This one may be a little difficulte but was really incredible to watch (may also be a bit old, not sure what age the kids are), at my local club, the instructor owned a black horse, she than used white boot polish (or horse make up whichever is easier) and drew all the horses bones on his coat (where they were etc), and than we put him on the lunge and over a few small jumps. It was really increadible to see! you could see how the bones moved and what mucles and bones were used for each diciplin! That was about 10 years ago and i still remember it to this day! If you have the time i highly reconmend it! also get the kids to like point out the bones they know etc
